(6 Feb 2019) RESTRICTION SUMMARY: AP CLIENTS ONLY POOL - AP CLIENTS ONLY Washington, DC - 6 February 2019 1. SOUNDBITE (English) Donald Trump, US President: "The United States military, our coalition partners and the Syrian Democratic Forces have liberated virtually all of the territory previously held by ISIS in Syria and Iraq. It should be formally announced sometime probably next week that we will have 100 percent of the caliphate. But I want to wait for the official word. I don't want to say it too early. Over the past two years we have retaken more than 20,000 square miles of land. We have secured one battlefield and we've had victory after victory after victory and retaken both Mosul and Raqqa. We have eliminated more than 60 mile high value ISIS leaders so we have a, if you look at the ISIS leaders of the 60 top, we've eliminated almost every one of them. Now they reform, we know that, but they're having a hard time reforming and I wouldn't say it's a great job to have because of us." ++WHITE FLASH BETWEEN SOUNDBITES++ 2. SOUNDBITE (English) Donald Trump, US President: "Thanks to the global coalition including all of you here today and to our other partners, the ISIS caliphate has been decimated. Nobody thought it was possible to do it this quickly." ++WHITE FLASH BETWEEN SOUNDBITES++ 3. SOUNDBITE (English) Donald Trump, US President: "Critically ISIS also now lacks a significant territorial base from which to launch terrorist attacks against other countries, recruit foreign fighters and spread havoc across the region. Their land is gone. It's a big factor. Their land is gone." ++ENDS ON A SOUNDBITE++ STORYLINE: President Donald Trump said Wednesday the Islamic State group's caliphate "has been decimated." And he said his administration could announce as early as next week that the U.S. and coalition partners have reclaimed 100 percent of the caliphate. Trump said Wednesday that the U.S. military will be giving him official notice very soon that 100 percent of the territory once held by the IS group has been retaken in Iraq and Syria. Trump gave remarks at the State Department to foreign ministers and senior officials from a 79-member U.S.-led coalition battling the IS group. In December, Trump announced the withdrawal of 2,000-plus U.S. troops from Syria. U.S. officials say IS has lost 99.5 percent of its territory and is holding on to fewer than 5 square kilometers (2 square miles) in Syria, or less than 2 square miles, in the villages of the Middle Euphrates River Valley, where the bulk of the fighters are concentrated. =========================================================== Clients are reminded: (i) to check the terms of their licence agreements for use of content outside news programming and that further advice and assistance can be obtained from the AP Archive on: Tel +44 (0) 20 7482 7482 Email: [email protected] (ii) they should check with the applicable collecting society in their Territory regarding the clearance of any sound recording or performance included within the AP Television News service (iii) they have editorial responsibility for the use of all and any content included within the AP Television News service and for libel, privacy, compliance and third party rights applicable to their Territory.
