Why the U.S. Must Not Ignore Violence Against Indigenous Women | NowThis

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4e9AJLYoe4Q
'Is this the message that we should pass down to our youth?' — One of the first Native American congresswomen Deb Haaland refuses to let the violence against Indigenous women be overlooked any longer. » Subscribe to NowThis: http://go.nowth.is/News_Subscribe In US news, the first Indigenous congresswoman Rep. Deb Haaland called for more resources to end violence against Indigenous women. Debra Haaland, (D-NM) Congresswoman: 'In 2016 it was reported that 8 in 10 Native women had survived serious violence during their lifetimes. 50% have suffered sexual violence and 90 percent of these cases have involved a non-native perpetrator. I appreciate the recent work that tribal governments have done to shed light on the silent crisis of gender violence and violence against women, that have gone overlooked in Indian country for far too long. Most of all I thank the Native women who have endured generations of systematic violence, who are ten times more likely to be murdered, and 4 times more likely to be sexually assaulted when compared to the national average. Further exacerbating this issue the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights ‘Broken Promises’ report states that crime and victimization in Indian country is caused by the systematic underfunding of tribal law enforcement and criminal justice systems coupled with pre existing barriers. In communities with the nation's highest rates of crime that are comparable to dense urban cities like Detroit and Los Angeles. I'm building on legislation like Savannah's act and Vanua to provide our women with programmatic resources that will expand to urban areas where many Native Americans are frequently overlooked in this silent crisis. My work will also provide resources to families of missing women. Part of of redefining who we are starts at home. Last week at the University of New Mexico, the first major public discussion of Pueblo feminism took place during the 20th Annual American Indian Studies Association conference. During a panel, students described the presence of women and two spirit people in modern tribal governance. One of the female students said quote, I am never going to be a governor or hold a leadership position in my tribe, because these are only positions reserved for males. This is probably why Deb Haaland ran for Congress, because she knew she couldn't have political power within our existing system, unquote. I asked, is this the message that we should pass down to our youth? Some tribes continue to practice a European tradition of patriarchal governments that refuse to allow women a seat at the table. As another one of these bright young women said, 'we are survivors of colonialism, but we don't have to continue to live in it.' To the students who organized this discussion to shed light on the issue. Thank you for your bravery and your strength. Your leadership is what keeps me moving forward. I see you, and I hear you.' #DebHaaland #NativeAmerican #IndigenousWomen #Indigenous Connect with NowThis » Like us on Facebook: http://go.nowth.is/News_Facebook » Tweet us on Twitter: http://go.nowth.is/News_Twitter » Follow us on Instagram: http://go.nowth.is/News_Instagram » Find us on Snapchat Discover: http://go.nowth.is/News_Snapchat NowThis is your premier news outlet providing you with all the videos you need to stay up to date on all the latest in trending news. Mitch McConnell supports this President Donald Trump wall effort and the national emergency. 2019 has already been a tumultuous year for Trump. Trump Makes Horrific False Claims About Babies at Rally | NowThis

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=thncOzqamTE
Trump’s latest false claim about an abortion law is not just grotesque, it's dangerous. » Subscribe to NowThis: http://go.nowth.is/News_Subscribe President Donald Trump is spreading a grotesque abortion claim — it’s 100% false. Trump said the following at the same Trump rally that saw a BBC cameraman attacked by a Trump supporter: President Trump: "Democrats are also pushing extreme ‘late-term abortion.’ Allowing children to be ripped from their mother’s womb right up until the moment of birth. What’s that all about? ...So in Virginia, the governor… The governor stated that he would even allow a newborn baby to come out in to the world and wrap the baby, and make the baby comfortable, and then talk to the mother and talk to the father, and then execute the baby. Execute the baby." This is blatantly false. There is no such thing as abortion ‘right up until’ birth. Only 1.3% of all abortions happen after 21 weeks. And then almost always because the mother’s health is at risk or the fetus is not viable The Virginia legislation allows for a determination by one doctor, not three to allow for an abortion in the third trimester if the birth threatens the mother’s physical or mental health. In addition to falsely characterizing the Virginia legislation, Trump supported the GOP health care bill that would have made it harder for children with special needs to access care, especially Medicaid. #Trump #DonaldTrump #Abortion #ReproductiveRights Connect with NowThis » Like us on Facebook: http://go.nowth.is/News_Facebook » Tweet us on Twitter: http://go.nowth.is/News_Twitter » Follow us on Instagram: http://go.nowth.is/News_Instagram » Find us on Snapchat Discover: http://go.nowth.is/News_Snapchat NowThis is your premier news outlet providing you with all the videos you need to stay up to date on all the latest in trending news. The Stark Difference Between Trump and Beto O’Rourke’s El Paso Rallies | NowThis

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JnIcTi-ITnY
A tale of two rallies: Watch Beto O’Rourke uplift the immigrant community of El Paso while President Trump spreads false information to inspire fear in the same border town. » Subscribe to NowThis: http://go.nowth.is/News_Subscribe In US news, President Donald Trump and former democratic Senate candidate from Texas Beto O'Rourke held opposing rallies in El Paso Texas on the same night. Beto ORourke famously lost to Ted Cruz in Texas senate race during the 2018 midterm elections. While Trump and O'Rourke both addressed immigration and immigrants at their El Paso rally events, they couldn't have been farther apart on the message. At the Trump rally, President Trump argued that we need more border security and the only way to do it was to build the wall. Trump railed against illegal immigration and a migrant caravan. In the Beto ORourke speech across town, O'Rourke explained that this city was safe long before the El Paso wall, he stood up for DREAMers, and stood against ICE and CBP. #Trump #DonaldTrump #TrumpRally #BetoORourke #Immigration #ElPaso Connect with NowThis » Like us on Facebook: http://go.nowth.is/News_Facebook » Tweet us on Twitter: http://go.nowth.is/News_Twitter » Follow us on Instagram: http://go.nowth.is/News_Instagram » Find us on Snapchat Discover: http://go.nowth.is/News_Snapchat NowThis is your premier news outlet providing you with all the videos you need to stay up to date on all the latest in trending news. Trump Supporter Attacks Journalist at El Paso Rally | NowThis

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DQrm5o_8ffc
A Trump supporter attacked a BBC cameraman at a rally in El Paso, Texas Monday night. » Subscribe to NowThis: http://go.nowth.is/News_Subscribe In the latest US news and Trump news, a supporter of President Trump wearing a MAGA hat attacked BBC cameraman Ron Skeans at a Trump rally in El Paso Texas. President Donald Trump is famously anti-media and often feuds with CNN news and CNN reporter Jim Acosta. Ron Skeans was violently pushed and shoved by a member of the crowd while covering a President Trump rally in Texas… The man was removed by security and Ron is fine. The president could see the incident and checked with us that all was okay. It is clearly unacceptable for any of our staff to be attacked for doing their job. — Gary O’Donoghue, BBC Washington Correspondent Reporter Jacob Rascon captured the incident from another angle and said a fellow reporter had to restrain the Trump supporter [Jacob Rascon clips]: You all right? Everything ok? 'This is the shameful moment when my cameraman Ron Skeans was attacked by @realDonaldTrump supporter in El Paso - after the President repeatedly goaded the crowd over supposed media bias.' What Trump’s Undocumented Workers Want You to Know | NowThis

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J5SVKkpevl8
Trump staffed his golf clubs with undocumented workers — now Sandra Diaz and Victorina Morales are speaking out about how they were mistreated. » Subscribe to NowThis: http://go.nowth.is/News_Subscribe President Trump and the Trump administration might take a hard line on illegal immigration, claiming to be against undocumented immigrants who they incorrectly allege drain resources like social security. But in his business, the personal Donald Trump immigration policy looks quite different from the White House policy. The Trump golf courses routinely hired undocumented workers, including Sandra Diaz and Victorina Morales who are now speaking out. Diaz and Morales: 'My name is Sandra Diaz. I am from Costa Rica. My name is Victorina Morales. I am from Guatemala. I worked for Mr. Trump at his golf course for almost five years. I worked for five years at Trump’s club in Bedminster, New Jersey. One of the main duties was taking care of Mr. Trump’s house, the house of his daughter, Ivanka Trump, and that of a Jets player. Everything that had to do with that, from cleaning bathrooms, to taking care of his personal needs, everything was my responsibility. There were six undocumented workers in housekeeping. They helped me get my fraudulent papers at the club. The supervisor took my picture inside at the laundry. Afterwards, his cousin took me to get the fake papers. Because we didn’t have papers, which they knew from the beginning, we were treated differently. There were a lot of insults, a lot of attacks at the club. They would tell us that we were stupid immigrants, that we didn’t know English, and they would compare us to dogs. One of my other responsibilities was to rain the new people. That was one of the biggest problems, because we would train them, and then they would leave because of the way they treated immigrants. One day, I was putting the sheets in the washing machine, and [my supervisor] hit me and said, ‘Stupid! Can’t you see that doesn’t fit?’ And she pushed me. If I hadn’t grabbed the wall, I would’ve hit my forehead on the door of the washing machine. When I worked at the Trump golf course, we were repeatedly threatened that if we kept complaining, they would get immigration to come and take us away, and that we should be grateful to even have jobs. We have people coming into the country, trying to come in, we’re stopping a lot of them. But we’re taking people out of the country. You wouldn’t believe how bad these people are. These aren’t people. These are animals. My supervisor would insult us a lot because she would hear how he treated us just by watching TV. She would talk about how she liked how [the president] acted, how he treated us because we were criminals and rapists, and that the president was just telling the truth. Because of all the problems, I went to talk to the general manager of the golf course to try to stand up for my coworkers and myself about how we were treated, but there was never any change. He tries to make immigrants out to be criminals and rapists— it’s heartbreaking to hear him say those things after he has seen us working there. We were there. We took care of his house. We had direct contact with him, with his wife, with his son, with his in-laws. I spent time with them in the same room. He had personally seen me, he had seen my coworkers, he had seen my friends who worked in landscaping. We had served, and served with love and we served well, and we are people who are honorable and know how to work. Trump: '[Hillary Clinton] said I used illegal immigrants to build [my new D.C. hotel]. Except I didn’t use one, for two reasons. Number one, I didn’t want to.' It’s just hypocrisy because he saw us there at his club, and it wasn’t just me. There were many of us that worked there in Bedminster. He even tipped me three times. He asked where I was from, and I said from Guatemala, and he said he liked Guatemalans because they’re hard workers. We share our story because it isn't just one or two working there at the golf course and resort. It isn’t just one or two. There are a lot. #Trump #DonaldTrump #UndocumentedImmigrants #Immigrants #Immigration Connect with NowThis » Like us on Facebook: http://go.nowth.is/News_Facebook » Tweet us on Twitter: http://go.nowth.is/News_Twitter » Follow us on Instagram: http://go.nowth.is/News_Instagram » Find us on Snapchat Discover: http://go.nowth.is/News_Snapchat NowThis is your premier news outlet providing you with all the videos you need to stay up to date on all the latest in trending news.
